Beaded necklaces are everywhere right now, and silk-knotting is the reason the best ones look the way they do. Natural gemstone beads and pure silk thread come together in a necklace designed by you, and created with a technique that’s been used for thousands of years. Learn the timeless art of silk-knotting and leave with a piece that feels personal from the first knot.
This workshop is taught by Shelby Evans, owner and maker behind Modeco Jewelry, a woman-owned jewelry line based in Portland, Oregon. With years of experience in metalsmithing and handcrafted jewelry design, Shelby is passionate about helping others learn the art of jewelry making in a welcoming and approachable environment.
In this 2-hour workshop, you will be guided through the steps of designing and hand-knotting your own gemstone necklace. Class sizes are kept small to ensure hands-on instruction throughout. Each student selects their own combination of natural gemstone beads and chooses from sterling silver or gold-filled findings to complete their design. Skills covered:
- Measuring and planning your layout
- Creating balanced patterns
- Silk preparation and knotting technique
- Finishing with professional-quality findings
All materials and the use of tools is included. You’re going to fall absolutely in love with silk-knotting! Extra beads, findings, and tool kits will be available for purchase after class. A selection of handmade charms will also be on hand for anyone who wants to take their necklace a little further.
